UNFOLDING 舒展
Premiered on Nock Nock Art Fair, Amsterdam 2025
UNFOLDING 舒展 started with a creased Godard poster, a ghost of the French New Wave. I didn't know it then, but that creased image started everything. I used to walk art fairs thinking I never belonged on those walls, now I'm creating this series especially for them. I tell these stories through female bodies and butterfly wings, not because they're delicate, but because they survive the violence of transformation. Inside, it's a riot; the way it meets the world is sheer grace. This series exists of 5 works, a limited edition zine and a limited run of printed long sleeves shirts. BACKSTORIES
Backstories is an ongoing photographic body of work by Alaïa Fonk that explores the female body as a carrier of memory, identity, and personal narrative. Moving between instinctive moments and carefully constructed scenes, the work navigates the space between intimacy and imagination. Photographed between Amsterdam, Curaçao, and Ibiza, the series reflects the geographies that shape Fonk’s personal and artistic world. The images form fragments of larger stories, where the body becomes both subject and landscape. The works are produced as fine art prints, with careful attention to materiality, scale, and presentation, emphasizing the physical experience of the image. Backstories was presented in a solo exhibition in Amsterdam in March 2025, and selected works were shown at Hungry Eyes in September 2025. The project also exists as a limited edition photography book and continues to evolve through exhibitions and new works. For sizing and pricing inquiries, feel free to reach out.
